It’s official – spring has sprung! The world is reawakening after its winter hibernation. Birds are twittering in the trees, flowers opening their petals to the sun and everywhere, everyone feels the joys of a fresh new season. With the warmer, longer days breathing life into everything around you, it’s the perfect time to kick your health routine up a gear. Say goodbye to cold-weather comfort eating and sluggish afternoons, with these five tips you’ll be summer-ready in no time.
Often, we fall into the habit of putting other people’s needs first, especially those of us with kids or vocational careers. If you’ve let your self-care routine lapse over the winter months, now is the time to put yourself back at the top of your to-do list. After all, if you’re not taking care of your wellbeing, eventually your output in other areas of your life will begin to decline. Even if it’s just five minutes a day, you’ll soon start to feel as rejuvenated as the season if you include some you-time in your health routine.
If the warmer weather hasn’t already put a spring in your step, it’s time to make an effort to get outdoors more often. A little vitamin D does wonders for your wellbeing (don’t forget sunscreen if you plan on spending longer than ten minutes in the sunlight). Not only does sunshine boost your mood, but it also raises your energy levels and increases productivity. Anyone spending long hours at the office, sitting behind a screen, should try step outside at least once during the day.
No health routine is complete without an exercise plan. We all know how hard it is to keep fit during winter, but now that spring is here, there’s no excuse. Ideally, you should be doing 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week. If you’re pressed for time during the day, something as simple as getting up and walking a few hundred steps every hour can help. But, don’t use a busy schedule to justify skipping the gym. There’s always time for healthy life choices.
Remember how mom always told you to eat your greens? There’s a reason for that. Vegetables are full of essential vitamins and minerals, and there’s no better time to experiment with a plant-based diet than spring. Even if you don’t want to give up meat completely, try to dedicate at least one day out of the week to all things veggie – like meat-free Mondays. And remember, fresh is best. Some great in-season options are spinach, cauliflower, broccoli, green beans and asparagus.
Cleaning up your health routine doesn’t begin and end with diet and exercise – you need to consider your mental wellness too. Technology is such a common aspect of our daily lives that we don’t realise the impact it has on our health. Do you find yourself picking up your phone or tablet every five seconds? The habit is so ingrained that no one even notices the amount of time they spend plugged in. While browsing social media may seem like downtime, it’s impossible to recharge your mind when you’re constantly checking the latest gossip on Facebook. Instead, put your electronic devices aside and allow yourself time to live in the moment. To start, try banning screen time before getting up and going to bed.
