At any age medical facilities and treatment are important, but perhaps as we get older their importance becomes more prominent. We all want to know that in a time of illness or injury that we can access appropriate medical care and be looked after by professionals.
Few companies still offer retiree benefits. And even if your employer currently says that it will cover you when you retire, unfortunately, there is no guarantee it won’t break that promise 10, 20 or 30 years down the line.
Do I, as a retiree, need medical aid/insurance?
Whilst you are not required to have medical aid/insurance, it is recommended. Although the State hospitals have the expertise to be able to professionally assist in an emergency situation, the real concern is whether they have the capacity to handle you at all. The State facilities are often over utilised and so there are long waiting periods before you can be attended to, which can be detrimental if you need urgent medical attention – even in an emergency. Therefore, the need for Medical Insurance, even just a hospital plan, is very high.
With medical insurance, you have access to benefits like unlimited private Network GP visits and acute medicine, but without the expensive cost of private medical care! It can also be used as a top-up product for when your medical aid savings runs out.
What options are available for Private Medical Cover?
There are a variety of different options out there, from base hospital plans that only cover you when you are admitted into hospital to the high-end plans that would pay for out of hospital expenses including Doctors, Dentists, Specialist and Medication.
What does medical insurance cover?
Being on a South African Medical Insurance would allow you to go to a private hospital with the peace of mind that your stay will be covered (if it is pre-authorised).
