Healthy living tips for better summer wellness

Hello, summer. The end of the year is finally upon us, and we’re all itching to swap our suits for speedos and stilettos for sandals. With the days heating up, and the festive period in full swing, it’s time to start winding down for the year and planning long, lazy days by the pool. But taking a break from work doesn’t mean you should slack off with your wellness journey. Too much sun and holiday eating can take a toll on your health. Don’t wait until the new year to revive your health resolutions. Start now with these six tips for healthy living. (And, read our summer safety tips too.)

6 Summer health tips for healthy living

1. Boost your diet with berries

A big part of healthy living is a balanced diet – the hardest thing to maintain with the tasty temptations of the Christmas period. One of the easiest ways to improve your summer eating habits is by adding fresh berries to your summer diet. Aim for a cup a day of blackberries, blueberries or strawberries – or all three. Each is full of antioxidants, just what your skin needs to combat sun damage. Berries are also a great source of fibre, ideal for helping keep your cholesterol low.

2. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

While you should be drinking water all year round, it’s especially important to keep your litres up during the warm summer months. With the sun at its hottest, your risk of dehydration is much greater – more so if you have a very active lifestyle. Letting your body become dehydrated is harmful to your health and can result in constant fatigue, constipation, kidney stones and organ failure. You should aim to drink 35 millilitres of water for every kilogram of your body weight. Or, try to aim for between two to three litres a day, but don’t forget to up your intake if you’re sweating it out at the gym.

3. Keep meals light

Healthy living and healthy eating go hand in hand. Now that it’s summer, it’s time to ditch the heavy meals of winter and opt for lighter meals. Not only do heavy meals take longer to digest, but they will leave you feeling sluggish and uncomfortable in the heat of summer. Skip the hearty lamb shanks and choose colourful salads, seasonal veggies, chicken and fish instead.

4. Stay active

Have you been working hard on your summer bod? It’s easy to start slacking off at the gym once you’ve engaged holiday mode, but don’t put your feet up completely. Staying active is an essential part of healthy living, and will keep your energy levels up for all those outdoor summer activities you have planned. To beat the heat, try to get your exercise in early, before the temperatures reach unbearable levels. You can also turn your holiday activities into exercise. Going to the beach? Walk a little further to find your spot. Lounging by the pool? Throw in a few lengths first.

5. Up your skincare

The scorching summer sun can take a toll on your body, sucking all the moisture out of your skin and hair. Keep up a good skincare regime, moisturising daily. It’s also a good idea to find a moisturising shampoo and conditioner to ensure your hair remains strong and full of life, especially if you’re going to be jumping into a chlorine-filled pool every day. To protect your skin further, don’t forget to apply sunscreen before stepping outside, and always reapply after swimming.

6. Take a break

Lastly, don’t forget to take a break. It is the holiday season, after all. Your body and mind both need time to unwind to recharge and remain healthy. Taking a well-deserved break also helps improve your heart health by lowering your heart rate, blood pressure, and stress levels. So, make full use of your Christmas break and relax to the max.
